Project Donations Update

SI is delighted to release an update of project donations so far received*. As you will see from the figures below, Soroptimists are really committed to raising funds for international projects. All of these projects are changing the lives of women and girls. We are extremely grateful for your on going support!

Project SIerra:

Sierra Leone

Project SIerra: A Family And A Future aims to raise
GBP £1 million to help disadvantaged women and children in Sierra Leone face their futures with confidence.

By strengthening families at risk of breakdown, helping young children living on the streets return home and empowering vulnerable young mothers, Project SIerra will enable more children to grow up in a caring family environment – giving them the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

Sierra Leone is one of the poorest nations on earth. More than 70% of the population are unemployed and live below the national poverty line, surviving on just 52p ($1 USD) a day. Life expectancy for women is 42 years and nearly a third of all children die before their fifth birthday.

Project SIerra is the current quadrennial project (2007 – 2011). So far, Soroptimists have raised
GBP £847,433 / USD $1,375,990 as of March 31st which is fantastic!

Alison Sutherland, SI’s Quadrennial Project Liaison, writes: "We are 85% toward the target, and there’s lots of great activity ongoing. Well done and so much thanks to all!"

As we enter the final stages of this project, please keep going in your fundraising efforts to enable us to reach our target amount of £1 million!

Hopes and Dreams for Everyone:

Moldova

Mainly because of poverty, women and girls in

Moldova
are widely exposed to trafficking. Among the most exposed are young girls, living in small villages, and even more vulnerable are girls, that for different reasons are living in boarding schools. By the age of 16, they are out of the school system, they are no longer looked after, and they have no place to live.

SI is working in partnership with the International Organisation for Migration to help these vulnerable groups of children. Our aim is to provide them with knowledge about the danger of trafficking, extend education opportunities, provide a safe place to live, work possibilities, and an economy that makes them able to maintain a decent way of living in familiar surroundings.

The 2009 December 10 Appeal, Hopes and Dreams for Everyone is an on going project. Support from Soroptimists has been fantastic. So far, Soroptimists have raised
GBP £201,266 / USD $324,845! This is one of the most successful December 10 Appeals ever!
