On 5 June 2026, Soroptimist International joins the global community in marking World Environment Day, reaffirming our commitment to environmental sustainability and to supporting women and girls as leaders of change.

This year’s theme, Women Leading Green Futures, highlights the connection between gender equality, climate resilience and community-based environmental action. Climate change affects everyone, but not equally. Women and girls are often among the most impacted, while also being powerful drivers of change within their families, communities and wider societies.

Supporting Women and Girls to Lead Environmental Action

Across the Soroptimist network, clubs are taking practical action to protect the environment, strengthen local resilience and support more sustainable ways of living.

The projects showcased for World Environment Day 2026 reflect a wide range of approaches — from climate education and school gardens to circular economy initiatives, biodiversity projects, wetland protection, tree planting and women-led environmental restoration.

This year’s submissions highlight initiatives that:

Support environmental education and awareness, helping women, girls, students and communities understand climate risks, make informed choices and take practical steps towards sustainability.

Promote women’s economic empowerment through circular economy approaches, including projects that transform waste materials into useful products, skills, income and more sustainable livelihoods.

Strengthen community action for climate and nature, including tree planting, biodiversity restoration, wetland protection, recycling initiatives and local climate resilience projects.

Advance women’s leadership in sustainability, showing how women and girls are not only affected by environmental challenges, but are also central to creating solutions.

Together, these projects demonstrate how environmental action can begin locally while contributing to wider global change. When women lead on sustainability, communities become stronger, more resilient and more sustainable.
