UNESCO Release Report on Education and Civil Society

UNESCO’s (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) Collective Consultation of NGOs on Education 2030 (CCNGO) Coordination Group has released a new report, entitled “The Role of Civil Society Organisations in 2050 and Beyond”.

The CCNGO Group represents 300 non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and the independent report has been submitted to UNESCO’s Future of Education Initiative – an initiative that strives to “rethink education and shape the future.” The aim of the report is to provide inputs from the perspective of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to the Future of Education Initiative, through a “human rights, humanistic and transformative lens.”

The report is comprised of three main chapters:

  • Chapter 1 – Education as a human right and transformative concept.
  • Chapter 2 – CSOs as “critical friends and partners” to government and actors in education.
  • Chapter 3 – CSOs support citizen participation and learning environments at community level.

As global trends change and new challenges arise, CSOs play the essential role of the “human touch” in shaping education, inclusive society, and policy frameworks. The report concludes by offering nine recommendations to guide and support CSOs towards shaping a sustainable future.
