Lugari Youth Leadership

Project Skills:
Soroptimist International has helped to fund the Lugari Youth Leadership Project which has been empowering young women in Kenya through leadership and mentoring training. Established 12 years ago by the Willing Hearts Society of Canada, the programme has consistently worked to nurture female leaders who can drive social transformation within their communities. In 2023, the SI Foundation extended its support by funding training for 200 girls, aged 14 to 18, at the Lugari Community Resource Centre in Western Kenya.

The comprehensive program covered accommodation, meals, transport, training materials, and the distribution of Days for Girls kits, ensuring accessibility for participants who travelled from across the country. The curriculum focused on a broad range of skills, including leadership, peace building, good governance, human rights, financial literacy, health, media, and entrepreneurship. These sessions were designed not only to build practical knowledge but also to enhance confidence, resilience, and community engagement.

Upon completing the training, the participants returned to their home regions with the expectation of applying their newly acquired skills to design and implement projects tailored to local needs. The goal is to foster a ripple effect, where empowered young women emerge as catalysts of positive change. With strengthened voices and leadership abilities, these girls are now better equipped to challenge harmful gender-based practices such as female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and domestic violence, while promoting peace, equality, and development within their communities.
