Introducing the Y20: Connecting Youth with SI

Soroptimist International is partnering with the U.S. Delegation to the G20 Youth 20 Summit 2021. The Summit will take place from 19 – 23 July in Italy, ahead of the G20 Leaders Summit held in October. As one of the G20 Engagement Groups, the Y20 Summit provides a unique opportunity for young people to have their voice heard and to influence policy at the highest level, concluding with the drafting of the Communiqué that is then presented to the world leaders as part of the official G20 Summit.

The purpose of the Y20 Summit is to highlight the most pertinent issues affecting young people today, and to propose solutions or policy changes that would overcome these challenges.

SI is hosting several Listening Tours in partnership with Y20 USA across June and July, where youth activists are invited to participate in small focus groups on the Zoom platform. SI’s Listening Tours are interactive dialogues that encourage participants to share local issues their communities are facing, examine global framework and policy solutions, draft recommendations, and network with a diverse group of other youth advocates.

Youth activists aged 18-30, with particular focus on the USA, are invited to join SI’s upcoming Listening Tour.

The next session will be held on Tuesday 22 June at 5pm EDT.

Participants will look at the effectiveness of global frameworks, policy and best practices, and how they might be helpful or challenging when applied to local community issues. We will also have a guest speaker with us: Maria Ní Fhlatharta. Maria is a legal researcher, policy advisor and human rights advocate from Ireland. She works on issues such as gender equality, health and disability – both nationally and internationally. She will share with us how her advocacy work contributed to the Yes For Equality referendum in Ireland and the Together for Yes campaign, which contributed to the repeal of the 8th amendment in the Irish Constitution that made abortion constitutionality illegal.

Please spread the word and invite to any young leaders or activists along to join our discussion: “Examining Global Frameworks for Gender Equality and How They Work”

Zoom link to join on 22 June at 5pm EDT is HERE.

Meeting ID: 973 1301 6433 | Passcode: 739191

We encourage Soroptimists to spread the word to any youth advocates and leaders. Please share the invite with your nieces, granddaughters, or other young people you know who are passionate about positive change and creating a more gender equal future!
