World Environment Day

Each World Environment Day focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern. This year, it is plastic. India is the global host of 2018 World Environment Day, 5 June, and ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, the theme. The world will come together to combat single-use plastic pollution, and urge governments, industry, communities, and individuals to explore sustainable alternatives, and urgently reduce the production and excessive use of single-use plastic pollution in our oceans, damaging marine life and threatening human health.

The Women’s Major Group, NGO Major Group and undersigned organisations, delivered a joint positioning statement on marine litter and microplastics, following a request in which the UN Environment Program sought responses to three main questions:

  • Major barriers to combating marine litter and microplastics;
  • Potential Response options and associated environmental, social and economic costs;
  • Feasibility and effectiveness of different response options.
