CSW70

The Seventieth Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) took place at a moment when nothing about the rights of women or girls can be taken for granted. And yet – Soroptimists showed up. With energy, with expertise, and with the conviction that this work matters precisely because it is hard.

Across events, meetings, blogs and advocacy, our movement brought lived experience to the heart of the United Nations. My warm thanks go to every Soroptimist who gave their time, knowledge and passion to this work. I hope you enjoy exploring the highlights of our CSW70 engagement in this newsletter.

But the conversation doesn’t end in New York. I warmly invite you to join our upcoming debrief webinar, where we will reflect together on what we heard, what shifted, and what it means for our work ahead.

Soroptimist International at CSW70

The Seventieth session of CSW recently concluded after almost two weeks of discussion, debate and deliberation on this year’s priority theme:

‘Ensuring and strengthening access to justice for all women and girls, including by promoting inclusive and equitable legal systems, eliminating discriminatory laws, policies, and practices, and addressing structural barriers.’

SI is proud to have hosted, co-hosted and participated in a range of exciting parallel events, forums and discussions. Soroptimists were also on the ground reporting — covering key sessions and mechanisms including the opening and closing sessions, decisions and outcomes, and the efforts of Member States and partner organisations to strengthen access to justice for all women and girls.

Our side and parallel events proved widely popular, with speakers and panellists drawing on their own diverse experiences to explore what access to justice really means in practice — across formal legal systems, informal community processes, and the everyday barriers that still stand between all women and girls and the rights they are entitled to.

With over 130 Soroptimists attending in person, alongside countless others who participated virtually from around the world, we certainly made our presence known and our voices heard at this key international event as we continue to advocate for the rights and freedoms of all women and girls.

International Women’s Day

Soroptimist International marked International Women’s Day with a message from Director of Advocacy Berthe De Vos-Neven. In her message, she introduced her role and outlined SI’s advocacy priorities.

Her message reflected on this year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls,” highlighting the gap between legal rights and lived realities, and the need for stronger accountability, implementation, and action.

At the same time, although the rally organised by UN Women was cancelled, SI CSW70 Delegates in New York still marked the day with enthusiasm at Times Square!
