Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey met with Commonwealth Accredited Organisations on 15 July. She wanted to share her vision and give her support. She is the first West African woman to become Secretary General.
“Let the Commonwealth be defined by purpose and that purpose is only realised through partnership.”
This was the Secretary General’s message at the first meeting with Commonwealth accredited organisations. The session focused on strengthening strategic partnerships, welcoming new accredited members, and sharing her renewed vision for a more responsive, purpose-driven Commonwealth.
A Bold Vision for Transformation
She outlined her bold and brave vision for transformation. As accredited organisations, we welcomed the inclusive dialogue, transparency, and chance to ask questions. We were encouraged by the emphasis on the importance of partnerships and the critical place the accredited organisations have in the new strategy. We look forward to working with her and being part of her vision as it unfolds.
She recognised the expertise, the commitment, and the reach we all have, but also stressed that at the heart of what makes the Commonwealth a living force for good is our collective work. Whether through advocacy, education, humanitarian support, or grassroots engagement, our work uplifts lives and communities. She mentioned that we are the agents of change and stewards of hope in her message.
Seeing Possibility in Challenge
She reiterated that in places where others can see challenge, we can see possibility. She also suggested that where others might turn away, we lean in—standing up for peace, inclusion, democracy, sustainability, and human dignity. She talked a lot about inequality, climate change, and the lives of today and future generations across the Commonwealth, from the small island states to major economies. The response must be one of determination that does not retreat.
She suggested to all the accredited organisations that we must learn to work together in partnership and also have vision alongside her, because under the present climate we can be seen as a force for good. She mentioned that last year alone, the estimated contribution to Commonwealth programmes exceeded £99 million. Beyond the numbers, this represents real impact—seen in innovation and ideas for effective delivery, empowered women, engaged youth, more resilient communities, and strengthened democratic practices.
Welcoming New Partners
She welcomed seven more organisations to the accredited family. In addressing the group, she emphasised her commitment to unlock economic prosperity across the Commonwealth, particularly in industrialised parts where stagnant growth threatened social stability and protection. She wants to bring the Commonwealth Charter to life and make our values visible.
To make our relationship stronger, she promised to work closely with us—not only to listen but to act, and equally not only to acknowledge our value but to elevate it. She talked about collaboration and thanked all the accredited organisations for their dedication and believing in this family of nations.
Strategic Planning Workshop
This was followed by a workshop, which was led by the Deputy Secretary General, who explained that all the accredited organisations have an opportunity to give our views on the Strategic Plan which is being discussed by the Board of the Commonwealth.
We were given three questions to consider:
- How should we (AOs and the secretariat) address the declining resources for development?
- How can AOs support the SG’s vision for a more resilient and prosperous Commonwealth?
- Which other institutions, partners, or actors should the Commonwealth engage to support the SG’s vision?
Moving Forward Together
Currently, all the accredited organisations have got together, and we are meeting virtually to discuss a way forward and have an input in the strategic planning of the Commonwealth’s vision. We can contribute and support by being in partnership with each other. The Commonwealth has challenges ahead, and as accredited organisations we will be responding in a constructive way.
