Using Human Rights instruments

Soroptimists are encouraged to become aware of whether their governments have ratified such documents and if they have registered any reservations in relation to them. Government ratification of international conventions and/or treaties commits a government to:

  • engage in dialogue with the international treaty monitoring body
  • submit periodic reports
  • introduce legislative, judicial, administrative and other measures to ensure implementation of rights contained therein.

Non-governmental organizations such as Soroptimist International can pressure governments to:

  • sign and ratify relevant international treaties and conventions
  • honour the commitments made by signing.

Find out more about Human Rights Instruments

A full listing of all such Human Rights Instruments under thematic headings is provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR website) which contains full copies of each document listed and information about which countries have ratified (with or without reservations).

The UNHCHR also maintains a database and provides information about the "conventional mechanisms" and treaty monitoring bodies to assist non-governmental organizations in advocacy.
